Dilation And Suction Curettage (D&C)

Vacuum Aspiration

This is the most common procedure and is done within the 6th to the 14th week. The doctor opens the cervix with a dilator (a metal rod) or laminaria (thin sticks derived from plants and inserted hours before the procedure). The doctor inserts tubing into the uterus and connects the tubing to a suction machine. The baby's body is suctioned out of the uterus and the doctor then may insert a curette, a loop-shaped steel knife, up into the uterus. With this the doctor scrapes any parts of the baby that was left in the uterus and puts them into a basin. The uterus is again suctioned out to ensure that no body parts have been left behind. bleeding usually is profuse.

This surgical abortion is done early in the pregnancy up until 7 weeks after the woman's last menstrual period. The cervical muscle is stretched with dilators (metal rods) until the opening is wide enough to allow the abortion instruments to pass into the uterus. A hose that is attached to a high-powered suction machine or a manual syringe is inserted into the uterus. The baby's body is then suctioned out.

Dilation And Evacuation

This abortion is done within the 13th to the 24th week. Because the developing baby doubles in size between the eleventh and twelfth weeks of pregnancy, the babies bones have calcified, the body is to large to be broken up by suction and will not pass through the suction tubing. In this procedure, the cervix must be opened wider than in the first trimester abortion. this is done by inserting laminaria a day or two before the abortion. After opening the cervix, the doctor pulls out the baby parts with forceps. The baby's skull is crushed to ease removal. The baby is then reassembled to make sure they got the entire baby out.
